Tuscaloosa is located in West Alabama where the Appalachian Range tapers and meets the coastal plain of Alabama. Tuscaloosa is 50 miles southwest of Birmingham and 95 miles northwest of Montgomery. There are five incorporated cities in Tuscaloosa County: Tuscaloosa, Northport, Brookwood, Vance, and Coaling. Tuscaloosa, the seat of the county government, has a population of approximately 80,000. Tuscaloosa County enjoys a diversified economic base. Twenty-eight percent of the workplace is employed by government which includes education and some portion of health care. Twenty-three percent work in retail and wholesale trade. Fourteen percent work in manufacturing. Eighteen percent work in services, with the balance of the workforce spread among construction, mining, transportation, finance, real estate, insurance, and public utilities. Cornerstones of Tuscaloosa County's economy include the University of Alabama, with approximately 19,000 students, and major health care centers including DCH Regional Medical Center, Bryce Hospital, Partlow Development Center, Northport Hospital -DCH, and VA Medical Center. Corporations that have located in Tuscaloosa County include Mercedes Benz, JVC, Johnson Controls, Uniroyal Goodrich, Tuscaloosa Steel, Phifer Wire Products, Delphi Harrison Thermal Systems, Coral Industries, Rite Aid Corporation, Globe Manufacturing, Gulf States Paper Corporation, ZF Industries, Hunt Oil, Jim Walter Resources, and many other manufacturers.
